Pembrokeshire octogenarian moves to DIY-free new home thanks to Shared Ownership to make more time for the great outdoors

An active 80-year-old from Pembrokeshire has made the move to a brand-new, low-maintenance home at Lovell Homes’ Augustus Grange development in Haverfordwest, with the help of Shared Ownership.

Barbara Thomas, who enjoys cycling and walking, has settled into a three-bedroom, semi-detached Lambourne style home, after spending 12 years in a four-bedroom home in Pembroke Dock, where she lived with her daughter and two grandchildren.

By moving to a new build home, Barbara can now enjoy a property that benefits from lower energy bills compared to an older home and requires much less upkeep, making more time for getting outdoors.

Barbara said: “I wanted a home that was all new, so I wouldn’t need to worry about DIY, but all the properties I saw before needed a lot of work doing. My daughter saw an advert for Augustus Grange, so we came and had a look around the show home and loved it. Living here just made perfect sense. My daughter has now moved to the town too, so it’s worked out really well.

“I used to live in Haverfordwest, so know it’s an ideal location with very good amenities. I enjoy walking and cycling around Haverfordwest’s beautiful old buildings and shops as well as to the huge shopping area slightly out of town. There’s a leisure centre, hospital, bus station and train station close by too, so I have everything I need.

“Augustus Grange is also nearby some lovely beaches – I’m originally from Nottinghamshire but moved down to Pembrokeshire years ago and just fell in love with the beaches.”

Barbara was able to purchase her new home with Shared Ownership, which allows homebuyers to purchase a minimum share of 50 per cent of their chosen Lovell home and then pay rent on the remaining share to Lovell Homes’ development partner Pobl, meaning they can settle into a new home with a smaller deposit and mortgage.

Barbara added: “I wasn’t aware of Shared Ownership previously, so Lovell Homes explained to me how the scheme worked and what I could buy. The scheme was brilliant for me, as it’s meant that I could put some money down whilst still having some spare.”

Barbara was one of the first homeowners to move onto the development and is now settling into her new Lambourne style home.

She continued: “I really like the kitchen, my living room is absolutely lovely and my home overlooks the green open space on the development, which is really nice too. The house I had before was much larger, but I don’t feel like I’ve missed out on anything and now I don’t need to worry too much about maintenance.

“Augustus Grange is landscaped very nicely, there are shrubs and green areas, and lots of trees have been planted or retained. My whole experience with Lovell Homes has been brilliant, particularly with the sales executives Adrienne and Anne, and I would definitely recommend them to family and friends.”

Augustus Grange, located off St David’s Road, is a mixed tenure development being delivered with Pobl Group and providing a total of 115 two and three-bedroom homes, just six miles from the stunning Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

This year, Lovell Homes achieved Gold for customer service with In-house Research, meaning an impressive 95.5 per cent of customers would recommend Lovell to family and friends.
